Converting a Gas Fireplace Between Propane and Natural Gas

Homeowners switch gas fireplace fuels for a few predictable reasons: a new natural gas line just reached their neighborhood, they bought a propane-heated rural property and want to swap to the local utility, or they’re moving an appliance between homes with different fuel infrastructure. The conversion itself is real and possible on many fireplaces. Natural gas arrives at an appliance manifold at roughly 3.5 inches of water column (in. W.c.), as specified in IRC 2021 §G2412. Propane systems deliver gas at approximately 10 to 11 in. W.c. The pressure gap is significant. On top of that, propane carries about 2,500 BTU per cubic foot while natural gas runs around 1,030 BTU per cubic foot, according to U.S. DOE energy data. Propane is more than twice as energy-dense.

A fireplace burner calibrated for natural gas has orifices sized to pass the larger volume of lower-pressure gas needed to hit its rated BTU input. Run propane through those same orifices at higher pressure and you’ll over-fire badly: too much fuel, rich flame, incomplete combustion, and CO production. The reverse conversion is less immediately dangerous but still wrong. Propane-sized orifices feeding natural gas produce a weak, lean burn that wastes fuel and can cause the flame to lift off the burner.

This is why NFPA 54 §9.1 is unambiguous: gas appliance conversions must use a manufacturer-approved, listed conversion kit. There is no shortcut that satisfies the code.


What actually changes during a conversion

Three hardware items typically need to change, and they need to be verified with instruments, not just swapped and assumed correct.

The orifice. The orifice is a small drilled fitting that meters gas flow into the burner. Natural gas orifices are larger in diameter than propane orifices because you need more cubic feet of natural gas to equal the BTU output of propane. A listed conversion kit includes replacement orifices drilled to the manufacturer’s specifications for the new fuel.

The regulator. As GTI technical guidance documents, the pressure differential between the two fuels requires either replacing or adjusting the gas valve’s internal regulator, or changing a separate service regulator upstream. This step is where DIY conversions most commonly fail. The regulator doesn’t just get swapped: manifold pressure must be measured with a calibrated manometer after adjustment and verified against the appliance rating plate. Most homeowners don’t own a manometer and wouldn’t know the correct target pressure if they did.

Pressure and CO verification. After hardware changes, a qualified technician checks manifold pressure, confirms flame characteristics visually (natural gas burns blue, sometimes with faint orange tips; propane burns blue with more pronounced yellow-orange tips, per GTI), and performs CO testing during live operation. The CPSC specifically cites improper gas appliance conversion as a contributor to residential CO incidents and requires CO testing after any work that alters combustion characteristics.

Some older fireplaces lack a serviceable internal regulator entirely. In those cases, field conversion is not safely achievable and the appliance must be replaced. This isn’t opinion. GTI technical publications document it as a known limitation of certain older equipment.


The permit and inspection requirements most homeowners skip

Here is where a lot of money gets lost at home sale or after an insurance claim.

IFGC 2021 §303 requires a permit before any gas appliance fuel-type conversion in jurisdictions that have adopted the code. That’s the majority of U.S. Jurisdictions. Section 621 of the same code requires a final inspection by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) before the appliance goes back into service. No permit, no final inspection, and you have unpermitted gas work in your house.

The FTC is explicit on what that means in practice: unpermitted gas work can cause insurance claims to be denied and creates disclosure obligations and complications at resale. A contractor who offers to skip the permit “to save you money” is offloading that risk onto you.

Two additional wrinkles depending on where you live. First, the IFGC and IRC are model codes. States adopt them on their own schedules, sometimes with amendments. California, for instance, operates under its own fuel gas code framework with requirements that diverge from the base IFGC. Second, gas utilities in many states, particularly in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, require separate notification or an independent utility inspection that runs parallel to any building department permit. Your permit card from the building department does not satisfy your gas utility’s requirements if the utility has its own process.

Before any conversion project starts, call your local building department and your gas utility. Both. Ask specifically what they require for a fireplace fuel-type conversion.


What the dual-fuel label on your fireplace actually means

A fireplace marketed as “dual-fuel rated” or listed for both propane and natural gas does not get a free pass on permits and inspections. This is one of the most persistent misconceptions we run into.

ANSI Z21.50 (the consensus standard governing vented gas fireplaces) requires that appliances listed for more than one fuel type include or reference a tested, listed conversion kit. The dual-fuel listing means the manufacturer has a tested kit and documented procedure. It does not mean you can make the switch without pulling a permit, and it does not mean a non-technician can execute the conversion reliably.

A fireplace converted without a manufacturer-approved, ANSI-listed kit is no longer considered a listed appliance under ANSI Z21.50. The AGA-certified listing disappears. So does the warranty. AHJ approval for the installation becomes questionable. That’s a significant legal and safety exposure for a $40 kit savings.


Venting and chimney: the part that almost always gets overlooked

Most people think about the burner hardware. Almost nobody thinks about the vent.

NFPA 211 (2024 ed.) §10 requires re-evaluation of the entire venting system whenever a gas appliance’s fuel type changes. Natural gas and propane produce different flue-gas temperatures and dew points. That difference affects what liner material is acceptable, whether the existing liner diameter is correct for the new appliance’s exhaust volume, and whether termination clearances remain appropriate.

NCSG technical training reinforces this point: two fireplaces with identical BTU input ratings, one running propane and one on natural gas, may require different vent diameters because the combustion air volumes and flue-gas volumes differ. Reusing an undersized or oversized vent liner after a conversion isn’t just a code violation. It creates real draft problems that can push combustion gases into the living space.

For direct-vent propane fireplaces specifically, re-verify the coaxial vent termination clearances after conversion. The manufacturer’s installation manual will specify required clearances for each fuel type, and they are not always identical.

CSIA guidance and NFPA 211 together establish that a Level 2 inspection is the minimum appropriate post-conversion inspection. A Level 2 covers accessible portions of the venting system interior and exterior, checks for liner integrity, and documents any conditions that have changed from the prior inspection. When conversion is not possible and replacement is the answer

Not every fireplace can be converted. If you own a discontinued model and the manufacturer no longer produces a listed conversion kit for it, you’re done. Using a generic kit, fabricating an orifice, or adapting parts from another manufacturer’s kit all take the appliance outside its listing.

DIY conversion materials cost less upfront. The problem is not the parts. It’s the verification. You need a calibrated manometer to confirm manifold pressure. You need a CO meter to check combustion products during live operation. Most homeowners don’t have either, and renting or buying them for one job is not meaningfully cheaper than hiring a technician. A technician also carries liability insurance and will pull the permit, which protects you at resale.

In rural areas of the Mountain West and Great Plains where propane is common infrastructure and natural gas lines are rare, the reverse conversion (natural gas to propane) occasionally comes up when a homeowner relocates a fireplace or buys a property without utility gas. The same rules apply in both directions.

Along the Gulf Coast, salt air affects the appliance hardware and the venting system in ways that matter post-conversion. Liner materials that would be acceptable in inland Texas may have deteriorated more quickly in Houston or Galveston. A post-conversion Level 2 inspection is worth more in a coastal environment than it is in a dry inland climate.

In the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, gas utilities run their own inspection programs.
