Dryer Vent Wall Cap Installation: Codes, Types, and Costs

Most homeowners give the exterior dryer vent cap about as much thought as they give the screws holding their gutters up. It’s out there. It’s small. It seems fine.

Then lint builds up behind a stuck damper flap, airflow drops, drying times double, and the duct turns into a fire-ready package of compacted debris. That small piece of metal or plastic on your exterior wall is not cosmetic. Why the termination cap matters more than most people think

That last point is where most caps eventually fail.

When the damper flap sticks open, outside air and moisture flow back into the duct freely. The EPA’s indoor air quality guidance identifies exactly this failure mode as a source of elevated indoor humidity and, over time, mold growth inside the wall cavity. When the cap gets partially blocked by lint or a bird nest, backpressure builds up inside the duct, the dryer runs hotter, drying times stretch, and the lint that didn’t make it to the outside starts packing into the duct itself. The CPSC recommends a simple check you can do right now: stand outside, run the dryer, and watch the flap. It should open freely during operation and close fully within a few seconds of the dryer stopping. If it doesn’t do both, the cap needs attention.

A missing cap entirely is not a pest problem with a fire risk attached. It is a fire risk that also lets pests in. NFPA 211 (2022 edition) is direct on this: any vent terminal that is blocked, damaged, or missing must be corrected immediately.


The four cap types, and the one you probably shouldn’t buy

Walk into a hardware store and you’ll find a wall of vent caps that look roughly similar. They are not interchangeable for dryer exhaust. Here’s how to read the differences.

Louvered caps

These have multiple fixed horizontal slats that deflect air downward and theoretically shed rain. The problem with fixed louvers on a dryer termination is that lint catches on each slat. Over a few months of regular use, the slats accumulate enough debris to meaningfully restrict airflow. Most professionals we’ve talked to don’t recommend louvered caps for dryer exhaust, full stop. They’re fine for bathroom fans. They’re a maintenance headache for dryers.

Single-flap backdraft caps

One spring-loaded or gravity-closed flap opens under exhaust pressure and falls shut when flow stops. Simple, inexpensive, and code-compliant if the flap functions properly. The failure point is the spring or hinge mechanism, which can corrode, get coated with lint, or get stuck in cold climates. Check the flap seasonally.

Magnetic-seal caps

These use a magnet to hold the damper shut, which creates a tighter seal than a gravity flap. That matters in areas with high winds, where a loose flap can chatter or be blown open. The drawback: lint coating on the magnetic surfaces can degrade the seal over time, so these need periodic cleaning to maintain their advantage.

Pest-proof floating damper caps

This is the current best-practice design for most residential dryer terminations. A weighted or floating central damper opens under exhaust airflow and drops shut when the dryer stops. The housing geometry excludes pests without using any mesh screen. This last point is not optional. It’s the code.

IRC M1502.3 (2021 edition) explicitly prohibits screens at dryer duct terminations. Screens trap lint. Lint at the termination is a fire hazard. There is no exception for “fine mesh” or “pest-proof mesh.” If a product uses any screen material to exclude pests, it does not belong on a dryer vent, regardless of what the packaging implies.

This is the most common mistake homeowners make when buying a replacement cap, and it’s also a code violation. Pest-proof performance must come from the damper geometry, not from mesh.


What the code actually requires

The base standard for residential dryer exhaust terminations in the United States is IRC Section M1502. Here are the requirements that matter most when you’re selecting or installing a cap.

The cap must be on the exterior of the building. Dryer exhaust cannot terminate in an attic, crawlspace, wall cavity, or any enclosed space. Exterior wall termination is the standard.

A backdraft damper is required. Full stop. Any cap without a functional damper does not comply with M1502.3.

No screens. As covered above, M1502.3 prohibits them.

Minimum 3-foot clearance from any building opening. That means 3 feet from windows, doors, and other vents. The duct termination must also maintain clearance from gas meters and combustion air inlets for fuel-burning appliances under related IRC provisions (Chapter 24, G2427). The clearance from a gas meter or regulator matters because lint and moist exhaust air near gas equipment creates its own hazard. If your gas meter is on the same wall as your dryer vent, measure carefully and contact your gas utility if the clearance looks marginal.

The cap must be listed for dryer exhaust use. IRC M1502.4 requires that termination fittings be listed and labeled for dryer exhaust. Many universal vent caps sold for bathroom or kitchen exhaust are not listed for dryer use. The difference matters because dryer exhaust runs hotter and carries more lint than bathroom exhaust. Installing an unlisted cap can also affect your appliance compliance. UL 2158, the standard under which electric clothes dryers are listed, ties the dryer’s safety listing to its installation configuration. A non-compliant cap can void that listing, which creates exposure in the event of an insurance claim.

Maximum duct length. This isn’t about the cap itself, but it affects whether a cap replacement should prompt a fuller inspection. M1502.4 sets the maximum developed duct length at 35 feet from the dryer to the termination, with required deductions for each elbow. If you’re replacing a cap on a run that may have been modified over the years, the full duct length is worth verifying.

One thing to hold in your head throughout: the ICC is explicit that IRC adoption varies by state and local jurisdiction. Some states operate under older IRC editions. California references the California Mechanical Code, which has its own provisions. Local authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) can and do impose clearance or cap-type requirements more restrictive than the base IRC. Before you install anything, check which code edition applies in your area. A quick call to your local building department takes five minutes.


Installation: what a standard wall termination looks like

If you’re replacing an existing cap on a straight, accessible, single-story wall, this is a manageable DIY project. If the duct behind the cap is unknown, the wall penetration has rotted framing, or you find pest debris inside the opening, stop and get a professional assessment.

Here’s the general sequence for a straightforward replacement:

  1. Turn off the dryer and unplug it. Don’t work with the duct live.
  2. Go outside and remove the old cap. Most caps are secured with screws through the flange into the siding, plus a bead of exterior caulk. Score the caulk with a utility knife, remove the screws, and pull the cap free.
  3. Inspect the duct end and the wall penetration. Look for lint accumulation, pest debris, moisture damage on the framing around the penetration, and whether the duct is properly connected and in good condition. If the duct is plastic accordion-style flex, the CPSC cautions that this material traps lint and degrades. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct is what M1502.4 requires.
  4. Clean the duct end. Remove any lint from the last 12 inches of the duct before attaching the new cap.
  5. Fit the new cap. Slide the cap’s collar over the duct end or insert it into the wall sleeve, depending on the cap design. The cap flange should sit flat against the siding.
  6. Secure and seal. Drive screws through the flange into solid backing (siding into sheathing, not just siding into air). Apply a bead of exterior-grade silicone caulk around the perimeter of the flange, keeping the bottom edge open a few millimeters to allow any water that gets behind the flange to drain. Fully sealing the bottom edge traps moisture.
  7. Test. Run the dryer and watch the damper flap open, then confirm it closes within a few seconds of shutdown. Check for exhaust airflow at the cap opening.

This assumes the duct is already in good shape. If you’re running a new termination through a wall from scratch, the wall penetration needs to be sized correctly for the duct diameter (typically 4 inches), the hole through the framing needs fire-blocking treatment per IRC R302.11, and the duct needs to be supported along its run. That’s a more involved project and, in most jurisdictions, may require a permit.


Common cap failures and how to spot them

You can diagnose most cap problems with a visual inspection from the outside.

Stuck or missing damper flap. If the flap doesn’t open when the dryer runs, exhaust is backing up somewhere. If it won’t close, outside air and pests have an open door. Either way, replace the cap.

Visible lint buildup on or around the cap. Some lint near the cap is normal over years of use, but heavy accumulation, especially packed inside the cap housing, means airflow is restricted. The duct and cap need cleaning.

Pest activity. Birds and wasps in particular favor the warm, protected cavity behind a dryer vent. A nest inside the cap or duct can completely block airflow. If you see nesting material or active pest traffic, the duct behind the cap needs to be cleared and inspected before a new cap goes on. The CSIA treats this as a fire hazard, not just a nuisance.

Cracked or deformed housing. UV exposure, impact, and freeze-thaw cycles break down plastic caps over years. Cracked housings don’t seal and can allow moisture intrusion into the wall. Metal caps last longer but can corrode where the coating wears through.

The cap is a screen. If your current cap has a wire mesh covering the opening, it’s code-non-compliant and probably partially blocked. Replace it now.


DIY vs. Hiring a professional: what it actually costs

The material cost for a quality dryer vent termination cap is modest. Basic single-flap caps run a few dollars at most hardware stores. Pest-proof floating damper caps and magnetic-seal caps from reputable manufacturers cost more but stay in the range most homeowners absorb without much thought. Add exterior silicone caulk and screws and the DIY material total stays low.

Professional labor is a different number. When a CSIA-certified dryer exhaust technician or a local vent service provider replaces a dryer vent cap, you’re paying for the cap, labor, and in most cases a full system inspection that checks the duct length, duct condition, and lint accumulation from the dryer collar to the termination. That’s a reasonable trade for a system you haven’t had inspected.
